Saturn square Uranus 2021 – the Clash of the Titans

On February 17th, 2021 Saturn is square Uranus – this is the first Saturn-Uranus square in a series of 3 between now and December 2021.

Alignments between Saturn and Uranus are a collision between the old and the new – times when change becomes unavoidable.

Saturn square Uranus is the most important transit of 2021.

WHY? Saturn and Uranus will be in a close orb throughout the whole year.

This is not a transit that comes and goes. This is a transit that will influence every single day of 2021.

A Venus-Jupiter conjunction for example lasts for 1 day only, and the next day Venus is already out of orb.

But because Saturn and Uranus both move slowly and have relatively similar speeds, they will remain within orb for much longer… 2 years to be exact.

The 2nd exact square is June 2021 and the 3rd and final square is in December 2021.

The February 17th, 2021 square is the first of these 3 exact squares, and it occurs at the 7th degree of Aquarius and Taurus.

Does this mean that the world will turn upside down on February 17th? Not necessarily, although Uranus transits usually come with big headlines… but for most of us, it’s not one single event we can ‘blame’ Saturn square Uranus for.

Saturn Square Uranus – The Long Process Of Change

The slow-moving planetary transits are slow… and the transformation they bring takes time, it is subtle, and not very obvious.

You may not be aware of the things in your life and inside of you that change right now, but you can bet that there is a massive rewiring going on, in the background.

In February, June and December 2021 the themes of the Saturn-Uranus square will become more clear, but keep in mind that this is an ongoing process.

Saturn and Uranus couldn’t be more different, however the paradox is that they work well together.

If we look at the order of planets in our solar system, Uranus follows Saturn, so there is a continuity theme there. Once the Saturn work is done, Uranus is the one that takes over from Saturn.

Uranus comes with the promise of freedom and enlightenment.

But the path to freedom and enlightenment goes through Saturn. We may all be free conscious beings by design, but we are simply not aware of this UNTIL, we master Saturn.

As Glinda, the Good Witch said: “You always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself”. There are no shortcuts to Uranus – we must do the Saturn work first.

Saturn is the last planet visible to the naked eye, and rules over time and the material world. Uranus is the first ‘invisible’ planet which means we cannot see it without a telescope.

That’s why Uranus is associated with things that are ‘invisible’: the sky, intuition, divine insight – things that are immaterial, things that transcend matter. Uranus gives us the promise that there is more to life than the material world as we know it.

And even if there are no shortcuts to Uranus, we do have a helping hand: that helping hand is Chiron. Chiron orbits between Saturn and Uranus, and is a bridge between the two.

Chiron is associated with our wounds, because the process of transformation from one state of being to another is never easy. It is only when we find a reconciliation between our material and divine nature, that we can become whole and heal our disconnection wound.

That’s why Saturn-Uranus square will feel much like a Chiron transit, and it is our chance to grow into the next version of ourselves.

Saturn Vs Uranus

Let’s come back to Saturn and Uranus.

Saturn and Uranus have opposite functions. Saturn creates structures. Uranus beaks these structures so that a new, superior order can emerge.

Saturn keywords are restriction, limitation, structure, boundaries, stability, rules, control, discipline, authority, responsibility, mastery. Saturn’s energy is contracting and stabilizing. Saturn glues things together (no wonder it rules the knees and the joints in the human body).

Uranus, on the other hand, represents the need for freedom and change. Uranus transits bring sudden and unexpected breakdowns and breakthroughs, flashes of insight and awakenings, rebellion and revolution.

Uranus’ energy is unpredictable and electrifying, stirring things up and creating excitement and restlessness.

square is a dynamic 90-degree aspect where confrontation and change are imminent. The planets in square share the same modality (in our case, the Fixed modality).

However, they see things from completely different lenses: Uranus through the grounding, earthy Taurus lens, and Saturn through the intellectual, freedom-seeking Aquarius lens.

The clash of these 2 titans can produce extreme tension and crisis in our society, and impact our lives as individuals either directly or indirectly.

Both Taurus and Aquarius are fixed signs. They don’t rush like Cardinal signs do (to quickly move to the next exciting thing, if their efforts don’t pay off immediately), nor adapt to circumstances like mutable signs do.

They DO the work, no matter how long it takes. The changes the Saturn-Uranus square will bring, will be long-lasting and will impact our society – and us, individuals in a profound way.

The Saturn-Uranus Cycle

The Saturn Uranus cycle takes about 45 years, with each major cycle transit building on the events of the last.

The current Saturn-Uranus cycle started in 1988 (with the conjunction in Sagittarius) and will end in 2032 (with the conjunction in Gemini).

The 1st square of the cycle occurred between 1999-2000, and the opposition between 2008-2010.

The last major transit of the cycle is the current Saturn-Uranus square (2021-2022). This is the 2nd and final square, also called a waning square, and comes with the biggest developments.

The waning squares have a 10th house energy. As you may know, the 10th house is connected to our career and purpose in life. The 10th house is a very ‘manifesting’ house, which means things are likely to happen. Things will come to some sort of culmination and resolution.

How The Saturn-Uranus Transit Will Influence You

To find out how the Saturn-Uranus square will influence you, try to recall what was going on in your life when we had the previous cycle transits, because any planetary cycle has a common theme.

If you had major life events around 1988-1989 (when the current cycle has started) then also pay attention to 1990-2000 (the 1st square) and 2008-2010 (the opposition). Do you see any common themes? Usually, the events of a transit build upon the events of the last.

For further details, look in which houses you have Taurus and Aquarius.

If you are an Aries ascendant, then Taurus is your 2nd house (because Taurus is the 2nd sign from Aries), and Aquarius is your 11th house (because Aquarius is the 11th sign from Aries).

If you have a Taurus ascendant, then Taurus is your 1st house, and Aquarius your 10th house. If you are a Gemini ascendant, Taurus is your 12th house, and Aquarius your 9th. And so on.

Once you figure out which houses are impacted, reflect on the themes connected to those houses.

Some people will experience this transit more intensely than others.

You will experience the transit at a personal level if you have:

  • Capricorn or Aquarius ascendant
  • Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) between 6°-14° Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius
  • Angles (Ascendant, IC, Descendant, Midheaven) between 6°-14° Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius

However tense the Saturn-Uranus square may feel at the moment, keep in mind that transits only bring necessary change and that the Universe always works in our favor.
